Volunteering Opportunities

Who we are

We are a regional non government organization that would like to see an improved quality of life in African communities. We use schools and local organisations as an entry points to communities and we are currently working in five countries in east and southern Africa namely Kenya, Malawi, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe

Our mission is to help transform schools to become sustainable and productive community learning centres that are rich in agro-ecological resources with the goal of seeing
school and college communities producing nutritious food and useful products; providing countless learning possibilities for the curricula; serving as resource centres within communities; and contributing to the development of the whole person.

Although the Regional Programme was established in Lusaka in 2006, it was built on the work of the Schools and Colleges Permaculture (SCOPE) Programme in Zimbabwe which has been facilitating participatory whole school land designs since 1994. The Rescope Programme went on to establish an office and became registered in Malawi in 2007.

Core values
Our core values are
Caring for the earth and respect for all forms of life
Children as custodians of the future
Integrity, transparency and accountability
Partnerships, empowerment, democracy and sharing
Creativity, innovation and fun
Non discrimination.

Structure
The Rescope Programme is run by a Board that is made up of one member representing the founder organizations from each of five countries in east and southern Africa. The Regional Facilitator provides a technical support service to the participating countries with the assistance of part time ILUD facilitation teams in each country. Each country has a semi-autonomous chapter that has its own Management Committee and secretariat.

Our partners are local organizations in the participating countries that are involved in, or support the implementation of productive and multi-purpose agro-ecological landscapes in school and or college communities in Africa.

What we do

The RESCOPE Programme promotes the sharing of experiences by partners who are committed to assisting schools and colleges to demonstrate sustainable land use with a view of enhancing healthy environments in and out of school.
RESCOPE partners work with schools and colleges to promote productive, multi-purpose and healthy environments that are designed to meet the educational, nutritional and other basic needs of the learners, teachers and parents/farmers.

Programme strategy
The Rescope Programme uses the Integrated Land Use Design (ILUD) process as a tool for school communities to develop demonstrations of agro-ecology that meet local needs. The Programme seeks to work closely with relevant government Ministries, NGO's and CBO's. The different partners are assisted to establish comprehensive schools sustainable land-use projects and programmes that share experiences at a regional level.

The Rescope Programme provides technical support to government and non-government partner organisations in the participating countries. The experiences of the SCOPE Programme in Zimbabwe and those of other Permaculture and Sustainable Agriculture projects and programmes in the region are used as opportunities for sharing information among partners.

Programme outputs
Partnerships between organizations involved in Environmental Education, Sustainable Agriculture and Nutrition in schools are strengthened.
Guidelines for practical and sustainable land-use in schools are produced and shared.
School and community links are strengthened

Zambia is a politically stable, landlocked country in southern Africa. The country has a sub-tropical climate and Lusaka is the capital city. The winters are dry and cool but mostly sunny while the summers are hot and wet. The currency is the Zambian kwacha which is currently trading at ZMK 6.2 to 1 USD as of January 2015.

Telephone: We recommend that you buy a Zambian SIM card for your mobile if you're here for longer than a week. They cost only 1 USD, just remember to get your phone unlocked before you leave home!

Internet: We recommend that you get a dongle when you arrive. Remember this is Africa; it works, but it can be a bit wobbly sometimes! There are many internet cafes with wireless internet services and there is a free wireless internet service at the airport.

Lusaka airport transfer:
We will arrange to pick you up from the airport.
Taxis can be found outside the airport and cost around US$30 to most central destinations.

Lusaka accommodation: For shorter term stay there are a few options for budget accommodation in Lusaka...

The cost of living in Lusaka compares well with other African cities.

Other attractions in Zambia include the majestic Victoria Falls and opportunities to see the big five. Lusaka has all the amenities that are expected in a city.
